This week saw the triumphant return of some of my favorite sketch comedians, Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele, in their brand-new show on Comedy Central. I’m excited that  their show has some great potential, even to non-fans. It also got me wondering: where have some of the other excellent alumni of MADtv ended up?

Will Sasso

Sasso played many characters in his dozen years on MADtv. Probably my favorite sketch of his was his spot-on Randy Newman impersonation, which was perfectly balanced between biting and affectionate so that it appealed to Newman fans (me) and anti-fans (my husband) alike. Sasso has had abundant sitcom and voice-over work. He had an arc on How I Met Your Mother, and starred in $#*! My Dad Says with fellow MADtv alum Nicole Sullivan. He also joined other former castmates Alex Borstein and Phil LaMarr (among many others) on The Family Guy.  Up next, he stars as Curly in the high-profile The Three Stooges movie alongside Sean Hayes, Jane Lynch and Sofia Vergara, due out in the spring.

Mo Collins

Collins has had character roles on numerous shows, but my favorite is her recurring role on Parks and Recreation as Joan Callamezzo, the local news media sensationalist who fancies herself the next Oprah, right down to starting her own book club. The role is hilarious, sexy and over-the-top, especially the episode where she is determined to prove that city council candidate Leslie Knope was not born in Pawnee.

Bobby Lee

Lee can always be counted on to steal a scene, no matter how small the role. He proved that a few years back on an episode of The League, a show that has also seen an appearance by former MADtv castmate Ike Barinholtz. Lee recently made headlines by not making headlines, after he got bumped from his slot doing stand-up at The Laugh Factory by Dane Cook, who proceeded to go on a crude, cruel rant instead of being funny. (Clearly, Cook is lacking in empathy.)

Mary Scheer, Arden Myrin and Nicole Randall Johnson

Scheer has done mostly voiceover work of late, but deserves praise for playing Marissa Benson on my beloved iCarly. And while it’s fantastic that Myrin has landed on the popular new show Suburgatory, I am mostly excited that she was a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race. I was also psyched to see Johnson in the final episode of the late and lamented (well, to me at least) Prime Suspect.

Taran Killam

Killam joined the MADtv cast late in the series run, but that opened the door for him to join an even bigger sketch comedy tradition; he is currently a featured player on Saturday Night Live. Even though he has yet to join the full-time cast, he has been making waves with his dead-on impersonations and impeccable comic reaction shots. He’s also a viral video sensation, as seen above.
